Mr. Newman
Head Band and Orchestra Director
Mr. Newman brings a wealth of experience and passion to his role as the band and orchestra director at Booker T Washington High School, where he has dedicated eight years to nurturing the musical talents of his students.
Originally hailing from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Mr. Newman's musical journey began at Carlisle High School, where his exceptional talent earned him prestigious awards including the John Phillip Sousa Award and Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.
Continuing his pursuit of musical excellence, Mr. Newman pursued a bachelor's degree in Music Education from Prairie View A&M University. During his time there, he distinguished himself as the head trumpet section leader of the renowned Marching Storm. His dedication and skill were recognized through awards such as the Dr. William McQueen, III Brass Award and the Most Extraordinary Section Leader award.
Upon joining the faculty at Booker T Washington High School, Mr. Newman embarked on a mission to revitalize the Orchestra and Band programs. His commitment to fostering the musical growth and personal development of his students has been unwavering. Under his leadership, both programs have flourished year after year, attracting more students and achieving remarkable milestones.
Mr. Newman's dedication to excellence has led to numerous memorable performances for his students, including playing for the Mayor of Houston on multiple occasions, entertaining the Twitter Company at Minute Maid Park, and receiving the prestigious invitation to perform at the Capital Building in Austin, TX.
Beyond the stage, Mr. Newman's impact extends to his students' futures. Many of his students have gone on to pursue higher education, with some attending accredited music institutions, a testament to his guidance and mentorship.
Mr. Newman's philosophy revolves around helping students become better versions of themselves through music. His passion, expertise, and unwavering dedication continue to inspire and shape the lives of countless students at Booker T Washington High School.

Ms. Serna
Assistant Band and Orchestra Director
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, she is a dynamic percussionist with an unyielding passion for music. Upon graduation from MacArthur High School, she made the decision to further her education at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) where she immersed herself in a rigorous academic program, majoring in Music Education with a specialization in percussion.
During her tenure at UTSA, she showcased her musical prowess across various instrumental ensembles including concert bands, marching bands, indoor marching percussion, and percussion ensembles.
Presently, while fulfilling her teaching responsibilities, she actively participates in instrumental ensembles such as the Cypress Symphonic Band and the Aldine Alumni Band, refining her craft and fostering connections with fellow musicians.
Now in her inaugural year as a teacher at Booker T. Washington High School, she ignites inspiration among blossoming musicians with her unwavering passion and expertise.
Beyond her musical endeavors, she delves into the realm of audio recording technology, enriching her understanding and proficiency in music production, with aspirations towards certification as a sound/recording

Ms. Johnson
Dance Instructor and Fine Arts Department Chair
Ms. Johnson is originally from Flint, MI. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance from Florida State University. She also holds a Master's in Education from Trident University and a teaching certification from The University of Georgia. She has performing experience with Flint Youth Ballet, Mahogany Dance Theatre, Phlava Dance Company where she also served as the Rehearsal Director, and Price Performing Arts Center's Company. Ms. Johnson has completed 19 years as a public school dance teacher reaching students throughout Georgia and Texas. She was apart of the inaugural staff that implemented the 1st high school magnet dance program in Clayton County, Georgia while serving as the district's lead dance teacher and writing the 9-12 high school dance curriculum. Many of her students have continued on to become professional dancers, performers on cruiselines, perform on broadway, dance teachers, and studio owners. Her former students are also members of collegiate dance programs and teams such as Boston Conservatory, Point Park University, Talledega College, Atlanta Dance Connection, Valdosta State University, Brenau University, University of Georgia, Albany State University, and Alabama State University. Her choreography has been showcased at several regional and national dance competitions receiving numerous high point, judge's choice, and overall achievements.
